Rodney Leroy Spain, Jr. ROY. Bravo. RJ King. Whatever alias you may have first met him as, you always knew he was something special. His passion for rap started at 7 years old. This grew into a passion for not just rapping, but producing, mixing, and mastering. Although his mother’s love for Mariah Carey and Hall and Oates and his father’s taste in Mobb Deep and Smokey Robinson gave RJ King a diverse ear for music, RJ’s passion for music has always been there and he’s now found a way to craft his own sound from his own experiences and tastes.
RJ was born in Columbia, SC, on February 1, 1997. Since then, he has split his time living between Columbia and Myrtle Beach, SC. He lives with his mom when he is in Columbia, and stays with his dad in Myrtle Beach. Ever since a young age, his dad taught him about artists such as Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, and Outkast. These three specific artists have really helped shape RJ into the artist that he is now.
At the age of 12, he was going by the name ROY. During this time, he started focusing more on his lyricism and writing abilities. He was teaching himself how to not just make music that sounds good, but that also has meaning. By the age of 14, he had received his own laptop. This allowed him to learn how to produce his own beats, as he had nowhere else to find them. As his production knowledge increased, so did his ability to not just produce for himself, but also for other local artists.
After graduating high school, he went to Midlands Audio Institute to study Audio Engineering. He received his certification and moved back to Myrtle Beach, SC. Here he opened up 808 Studios with his father in 2016. He built connections in the local area, produced for many local artists, and helped shape the sound of Myrtle Beach itself.
Unfortunately, in 2019, the studio had to close its doors. RJ, however, has still been able to produce, mix, master, and record out of the comfort of his own home. This ended up being a blessing in disguise as it allowed him to continue working through the pandemic of 2020, as well as focus on his own music.
Since 2019, he has been working on his first studio album alongside DESTRONYC. RJ King has now shaped himself into the artist that he always wanted to be. This is the moment he has been dreaming of since he was a 7-year-old boy. He is now 24 and this is just the start. This is the time for him to make his legacy. This is the time for “IMMORTAL.”
